St Bartholomew's, Orford

The graveyard of St Bartholomew’s Church in Orford, Suffolk is one of the few things that remains
mostly unchanged from the days that the Chapman family first resided in Orford. The Chapmans lived in Orford for many years (estimated from the 1800s until sometime during/after WW2) and were great contributors to the local community, running the original grocers located in the Market Place where houses now stand.

Several members of the family rest peacefully in the graveyard of St Bartholomew’s just a few feet from the place they called their home and their place of work. Whilst they would recognise a few things from their time, progression has not always meant improvement.

The lighthouse that years ago guided boats into the port of the busy fishing village that Orford once was is now crumbling into the waters it once warned. Orford is now a popular location for tourists from far and wide with its medieval castle, quay and great food, it thrives during the spring and summer but is left alone to the locals that reside there throughout the colder months. These things combined have turned Orford into what some would consider an idyllic countryside village but to many locals it has become a shadow of its former self.
